John Scannell

John Scannell was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and

brother who touched the lives of many. He passed away on July 1, 2025, at the age of

88.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on February 16, 1937, John was known for his boundless

energy and sharp mind. He joined the Navy as a teenager and between his active and

reserve duty, he dedicated over thirty years of his life before proudly retiring as a Chief

Petty Officer.

With his first wife Louise, he raised three daughters Sharon, Valerie, and Stephanie. In

his later years he was blessed to share his life with his wife Kul and helped to raise his

stepson, Ryan.

John was a forward thinker, always generating ideas, exploring possibilities, and

envisioning how the future might unfold. Whether dreaming up solutions or embracing

cutting edge technologies, he was often years ahead of his time. He loved to travel,

tinker with computers and cars and could never pass up being one of the first to try the

latest gadget.

Naturally curious and unafraid to take on the unfamiliar, John never hesitated to reinvent

himself, always embracing new chapters, fresh challenges and unexpected paths with

conviction. He could pivot with ease when necessary to keep moving forward, even if

this meant changing industries, relocating for opportunity, or taking a leap of faith into

uncharted territory. For him, starting over was never a setback but an exercise in

courage and a chance to test his own resilience. His career spanned from aerospace to

computer technology ultimately leading to his position as Director of Information

Technology for Los Angeles County. This would be his final chapter before spending his

retirement in Oceanside, California, near his fellow veterans.

He is survived by his wife Kul; his children Sharon Shifflett, Valerie Anton (David),

Stephanie Sabatini (Joseph), and Ryan Lertpichitkul; his beloved grandchildren Angela

(Morgan), Victoria (Bernd), Jarad, and Hailey; his cherished great-grandchildren

Bentley, Christian, Norah, Benedikt, and Jonathan; and his brother David Deaton. He

was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Deaton and Roger Scannell and his

siblings Eyrlene, Judy, Ronnie, and Bill.

John’s memory will be carried forward in the personal ways he taught each of us to

embrace life with optimism and joy.

A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church

in Carlsbad, California, followed by burial with military honors at Miramar National

Cemetery in San Diego, California.
