John Alfred Maidl, age 76, of Sauk Rapids passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Memorial Services will be held at 11:30 AM on August 9th at St. John Vianney Church in Fairmont, MN, with Father Dobbs officiating. There will be visitation one hour prior to services, and John will be laid to rest at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls at a later date.
John was born August 21, 1948, in Little Falls to Alfred and Mary (Harris) Maidl. He grew up in Royalton, New Ulm, and Coon Rapids, where he later graduated from high school. He served in both the Air Force and the Army National Guard, retiring after over two decades of honorable service. In 1993, John moved to Sauk Rapids and worked as a Technical Project Leader for Stearns County for more than 14 years before retiring in 2010.
John was a man of quiet strength and steady hands. He found joy in simple pleasures—bird watching, tending to his flowers, listening to his favorite music, and getting lost in a good show. He poured his heart into every project, every engine he repaired, every piece of wood he shaped. He cared deeply for his family and adored the company of his pups. To those who knew him, John was dependable, kind, and unshakably genuine. He touched countless lives with his steady presence, his dry wit, and his deep well of wisdom.
John is survived by his daughter, Laura Nutt of Fairmont; sons, Joseph (Erin) Maidl of Fairmont, and John Jr. (Tina) Maidl of Sauk Rapids; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Thea, Josh, Joseph, Serenity, and Arya; great-grandchildren, Sidney, Jebidiah, Madison, Clara, Evelyn, Maycee, and Jethro; siblings, Kathleen (William) Janski of Rice, Wallace Maidl of Rice, Robert (Asuncion) Maidl of Sauk Rapids, Leona Wagner of Rice, Merry Ann Yell of Sauk Rapids, Marleen Maidl of St. Cloud, and Lois Boe of St. Cloud; and sisters-in-law, Rose Maidl of Sartell and Elaine Maidl of Cokato.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Gerry and Richard Maidl.
John’s legacy will live on in the memories he made, the family he cherished, and the countless things he quietly fixed, built, and made better—just by being there.
