Janet G. Mittelsteadt, age 87 of Rhinelander, passed away peacefully on September 15th 2025 at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 6, 1937, to Ervin and Cora (Asmundson) Sommers. She had worked at A & W restaurant as a car hop and then at Montgomery Wards, in Rhinelander.
She married Lyle Gilman and together they had five children. Lyle preceded her in death on December 24, 1972, She married James E. Mittelsteadt, the love of her life, on March 22, 1975, which enlarged her family by 3 children. They were blessed with more than 24 years of fun and family. Jim then preceded her in death on October 2nd, 1999.
Jan liked to read and was an avid Packer and Brewers fan but what meant the most was spending time with her family.
Janet is survived by her children Charles (Gig) Gilman, Toni Lukarich, Todd (Teress) Gilman, Euqene (Caren) Gilman, and Gary Gilman, her grandson James Gilman, step grandchildren Kevin (Megan) Carlson and Kari (Paul) Larson, grand-dog Nugget, her stepchildren Paula (Dave) Deffner, Kim O’Reilly, and Todd (Melissa) Mittelsteadt, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, nephews Rick Zastrow and Steve Sommers, niece Lenore (Scott) Blemke, and her brother-in-law Dave (Karen) Mittelsteadt.
In addition to her husbands, Janet was also preceded in death by her son-in-law Larry Lukarich on 7/29/2011, her parents, sisters Donna Mewhorter, Karen Cotttrell, Kay Zastrow, and Coralee Sommers and her brother Donald Sommers.
Visitation for Janet will be held on Monday September 22, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with memorial services following at 12:00 PM, all at the Carlson Funeral Home. Interment will take place in the Northland Memorial Park Cemetery. You may leave your private condolences for Janet’s family at www.carlsonfh.com. She took a piece of our hearts with her and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
