James Chavira Ruiz aka “BIG JIM”, “Jimmy” passed away on October 20, 2025. Jimmy was born on December 31, 1944 and was proud to be a New Years Eve baby.

Not only was Big Jim a lifelong resident of Tolleson, AZ he was Tolleson. Known as the unofficial town historian he co-authored a book for Images of America – TOLLESON.

In his young adult life Jimmy became head of household for his mom and younger brothers which made him the strong man he was until his last day.

Jimmy served many roles in his hometown during his lifetime. He was a Little League coach, Knight of Columbus and served on the Parish Council for Blessed Sacrament.

His most prominent role was serving as Postmaster of the Tolleson Post Office for 37 years. Everyone knew Jimmy the Postman and he knew everyone and their address.

After retiring, you could find Jimmy around town, hanging out with friends and family. If you didn’t see him, you could hear his laugh and know Big Jim was around.

There are not enough words to describe Big Jim, he was truly one of a kind. If you knew him you will know.

Jimmy will be greatly missed but he is now reunited with his beloved wife Maria in Heaven for which his family takes comfort in.

He was also preceded in death by this parents Santiago and Maria Luisa Ruiz and brother Alex Ruiz.

He is survived by his children Sabina (Anthony), Veronica and Santiago. Grandchildren – Matthew, Maria Tatiana, Angelica, Joseph, Roman, Annisette and Jacob. Great-Grandchildren – Zenio, Aiden, Vincente and Isaiah. Brothers Ralph, George and Henry. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, godchildren.
