James Kidwell

James “Jim” Lee Kidwell, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 29, at his home in Damascus, Virginia. Born on July 17, 1942, in Laurel, Maryland, he was the son of the late Francis and Jennings Kiner. He was preceded in death by his brother Jerry Kiner and his son Troy Kidwell.

Jim grew up in the mountains of West Virginia, where he developed a deep love for football and a reputation as a fierce nose tackle. He earned All-State honors and cherished the memory of being mentored by the legendary Sam Huff.

While working at Montgomery Ward in Baltimore, Jim met the love of his life, Edna Henderson. They married and shared over 60 beautiful years together. Soon after their wedding, they moved to Sundance, Wyoming, where Jim served his country in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. It was there that their two sons, Michael and Troy, were born.

After completing his military service, Jim returned to Maryland and began a dedicated career as a firefighter and paramedic in Anne Arundel County. Alongside his partner Calvin, Jim served his community with courage and compassion, and their antics became so beloved they were once featured in the Capital Gazette.

Following retirement, Jim and Edna settled in Damascus, Virginia, returning to the peace of the countryside. Ever the adventurer, Jim hit the road with son Troy, traveling cross-country as semi-truck drivers. Later, he joined the team at Food City, not just to stay active, but to meet new friends and share his trademark jokes-because Jim never met a stranger.

He was an avid fisherman with a passion for telling great fish stories. From Montana to Block Island, RI, he chased “the big one” with joy and laughter. His favorite spots were Holston Lake, where he spent cherished days fishing for walleye with his friend Johnny, and any location his nephew Dave and son Brandon could dream up.

Jim was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather. He is survived by his wife Edna Kidwell; his son Michael L. Kidwell and wife Rebecca L. Kidwell; and his two grandsons, Jacob M. Kidwell and Joshua L. Kidwell.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Garrett Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM in the Riverview Chapel at Garrett Funeral Home with Pastor Robby Coggins and Pastor Tracy Newman officiating.
