He was born in Pike County in 1940 to Charles and Mary Brooks Culverhouse. He was blessed with 5 brothers with whom he shared countless fond and fun memories. He enjoyed visiting family, fishing and going to the show “The Royal movie theater or drive-in”. He loved to share that the cost of movie admission was only .50 cents. James attended Banks Elementary, Slocomb Middle School and Hartford High School. He joined the National Guard on June 22, 1959, he served 6 months. James married his loving wife Margaret K. Williams on August 20, 1961, and they were married for 48 years until her passing. After their marriage, he and Margaret moved to California. He mobilized from the National Guard to the Army tank regimen in Fort Irwin, California October 11, 1961. James transferred from the AL National Guard to the FL National Guard in Jacksonville on August 12, 1962, and there he and Margaret continued to live and raise their family. He served in the Navy in Vietnam on the USS Intrepid in 1966 and was honorably discharged in 1970. James loved his time in the service and the travel it provided. He served in the National Guard, Army and the Navy and was very proud of his service. He was an artist and loved watching movies (he had over 10,000!) and listening to music, cars, and shopping for anything. James was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his parents, Charles and Mary; his brothers, Jimmy, Laddy, and Jessie “Slugger”, and numerous beloved pets, especially Claude, his poodle.
