Ruffin, Jacqueline M. “Jackie,” 86, of Atlantic City, was born on September 8, 1938, to Edna and Theodore Singer. She attended the Atlantic City Public Schools and Atlantic Community College, where she earned her GED. Jackie passed away on July 9, 2025, with her beloved daughter, Fonda, and her canine companion, J.R., by her side.
During the 1970s, Jackie worked at various local establishments, including the World Famous Club Harlem, Frank’s Restaurant and Deli, Snack-It Restaurant, and AC News Bookstore. In 1983, she began her career with the City of Atlantic City Police Department as a Traffic Control Officer. After meeting the training requirements, she advanced to the position of Police Matron, which she held until her retirement in 2004.
Jackie loved life, and her sense of humor was unmatched. Her favorite hobby was traveling, and her preferred vacation destination was Las Vegas, where a visit to Walmart was always a necessity. She was a member of the Golden Circle of South Jersey, Inc., and an active participant in the Oziel Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliation, Atlantic Chapter #3, until its closure.
Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, William “Buddy” Ruffin Sr.; her siblings, Geraldine Dunn, Shirley Dansby, Wanda Dunn, and her brother, Bobby Dunn. She also mourned the loss of her daughters Denise Murray, Robin Salaam, and Selena Ruffin, as well as her son Michael Murray, grandson Jason Huckaby, and granddaughters Iyanah and Nadirah Ruffin.
She is survived by her daughter, Fonda Ruffin, of Atlantic City; her sons, Robert (Leon) Murray Jr. and his wife Gina of Mays Landing, and Dardo (Hakim) Ruffin of Powder Springs, GA; her sister, Lorraine (Linda) Lark; and her brothers, Ronald Dunn and his wife, Jackie, and Raymond Singer and his wife, Cammie. Additionally, she is survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Jackie will be truly missed by her companion and son, J.R., also known as Scruffy.
