Hal Smith

Hal I. Smith, a cherished Husband, Dad, Granddad, Uncle and Friend, passed away on December 3, 2025. Born in Springfield, IL, on November 22, 1950, to parents William H. and Betty Rose (Davis) Smith, Hal remained a steadfast member of the Springfield community throughout his life.

A 1968 graduate of Springfield High School, Hal went on to earn a BA in Business from Sangamon State University in 1972, followed by a Master’s in Public Administration in 1976. His deep dedication was reflected in a distinguished career that began with a vital role on the U.S. Senate staff for Senator Charles H. Percy. Afterward, he committed over 30 years in the private sector to three global gaming and entertainment companies. Though he attempted retirement in 2015, Hal’s expertise and passion for serving others drew him back into the workforce. He generously offered his time and skills first to Lincoln College and then to the office of Congressman Darin LaHood. Ultimately in 2019, Hal became the Executive Director for Development at the SIU Foundation at the School of Medicine before he finally embraced retirement fully in 2024.

Among his various roles, Hal was a devoted member of Blessed Sacrament Church, where his faith and commitment to Christian values were evident. His love for his family was paramount. Hal was the devoted husband of 42 years to Meg (Moore) Smith, a loving father to Elizabeth (Nicholas) Lucin and David (Rebecca) Reid, and a doting granddad to Madison and Caden. His happiest days were spent with his grandchildren. His loss is deeply felt by his “brother” Richard Gajate Garcia, brother-in-law Van E. Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins, all of whom found him to be a loving and irreplaceable figure. He also had a special place in his heart for his dear friends, Thomas J. O’Brien and Larry Bailey, and little brother through the Big-Brother Program, Hank Hibbs.

Known for his wisdom and passion, Hal’s impact extended beyond his immediate circle. An avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, Hal was thrilled with his son’s employment and association with the team for over 25 years. It was a rare day not to find him in St. Louis Cardinals clothing. His spirited pursuit of knowledge led him to travel six continents, eagerly exploring and appreciating diverse cultures.

One of his greatest joys in life was watching his daughter Elizabeth take the stage from high school, college and beyond. She has performed on many professional stages throughout California, including Disneyland.

While we mourn his departure from this earthly journey, Hal’s legacy endures in the lessons he imparted and the love he shared. Preceded in death by his parents and his loving sister, Sharon Rose Anne Johnson, Hal leaves behind a tapestry of memories that those who knew him will treasure forever.
