Greg MacKenzie, 79, of Rye, New York passed away on August 23, 2025. He was a beloved husband, father and uncle. His friends and family affectionately called him “Winch” and “Sparky”.
As a lifetime resident of Rye, he was born in Port Chester on November 18, 1945. Greg was the son of Dorothy Darr and Bruce Alexander MacKenzie.
Greg was educated locally before he began his electrical contracting career in 1965. He became the youngest licensed electrician in Westchester County at the age of 17. Along with his wife, he served the local and surrounding communities for over 60 years with their business Mackenzie Electrical Contractors, Inc. which was established the year they married. He had been described by another contractor as “the electrician all other electricians were measured by”.
Greg’s other true passion was restoring award-winning antique automobiles. His attention to the detail and history of the vehicles was impeccable. Over his life, he restored a 1931 Model A Pick-Up truck, a 1917 Buick Roadster, and a rare 1917 Indiana stake bed truck that he affectionately called “Indy”. He is pictured above in his 1975 International Bucket Truck which he had built himself.
He was an avid collector of antique electrical meters, panels and equipment. He possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of commercial and residential electrical services and was often called upon to offer counsel to other electrical contractors.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara MacKenzie, whom he married on December 4, 1965 and the other half of his successful business. He often said he “couldn’t do it without her”. He is also survived by his daughter Keri MacKenzie Rapisarda.
He was a dedicated and enthusiastic member of the Connecticut Yankee Chapter of the Antique Truck Club of America.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in his name for a scholarship fund organized by the Connecticut Yankee Chapter of the Antique Truck Club of America. If you would like to donate, please send donations to:
