Mrs. Gladys Ray Burkett Shatley, age 91, of Crumpler, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 25, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 3:00 pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Herb Parunak and Rev. Steve Witherspoon officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, from 1:00–3:00 pm, two hours prior to the funeral service.

Mrs. Shatley was born in Ashe County on July 17, 1934 to the late Lawrence Park and Dora Maude Marsh Burkett. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Martin Shatley.

She was a loving and cherished mother, sister, and friend. Gladys was a caring person who enjoyed baking pies and cakes and sharing them with family and friends. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where she loved playing the organ. Gladys was also a dedicated volunteer at Ashe Services for the Aging for many years, where she gave her time and heart to helping others.

She is survived by: her son, Robert Lawrence Shatley of Crumpler; a sister, Katherine Burkett Gentry of Jefferson; a brother, Bill Burkett and wife, Jean, of Jefferson; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends also survive.

Pallbearers will be: Michael Burkett, Lawrence Burkett, Shaye Gentry, Eddie Douglas, Roger Brady, Curt Gentry, Nathan Reed, and Ronnie Adams.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Aaron Reed, Jason Davis, Scott Kastl, Jerry Marsh, Jamie McNeill, Henry Lyall, Hunter Lyall, Jamie Adams, Michael Adams, Mark Goins and Daniel Viers.

The family respectfully requests no food, please.

If there was ever a virtuous woman, Gladys was. She loved her Lord Jesus Christ. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family, church, and community.
