Gerardo Solon Gutierrez, a man of profound wisdom, passion, and love, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, in Chicago, IL. Born on November 30, 1956, in La Lima, Honduras, Gerardo’s journey was one marked by curiosity, dedication, and an unyielding commitment to his family and the community that he cherished. And he would say, β€œhe crawled out of the jungle.”

Gerardo’s academic pursuits were a testament to his love for learning and the arts. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Photography from Columbia College Chicago, he went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. His legal career was as distinguished as it was impactful, with Gerardo appearing before the highest courts in the land, including the United States Supreme Court and several Circuit Courts of Appeals, advocating fervently for justice and a fair legal immigration process.

Beyond the courtroom, Gerardo’s creative spirit flourished. An award-winning filmmaker, he captured the essence of humanity through his lens, telling stories that resonated with truth and compassion. He enlisted in the air force because of his passion for flying. His love for the sea led him to become an avid scuba diver, exploring the depths with the same enthusiasm he applied to every aspect of his life. As a wine connoisseur, Gerardo savored the complexity and nuance of flavors, much like the intricate layers of his own experiences.

Gerardo’s interests were as varied as they were rich. He was a voracious reader and writer, a traveler who sought adventure and new horizons, and a culinary enthusiast who found joy in cooking. His love for boating provided a sense of freedom on the water, while his appreciation for film and photography allowed him to capture and cherish life’s fleeting moments. Gerardo was also a dedicated sports fan, often found cheering on his favorite teams and enjoying movies with his beloved friends and family.

Family was the cornerstone of Gerardo’s life. He is survived by his children, Geoffrey, Genesha and Julie-Ann, as well as his cherished grandchildren Jaselle, Nana, Diann, Miguel, Jessica, Jacob, April, Carolyn, Gabriel and Joseph, as well as his precious godchildren Matthias, Lee Ann and Kelly Ann, whom he adored. The beloved mother of his children, Rosamaria, shared in the joy of their family’s milestones, memories and miracles. Every year, Gerardo would gather his loved ones for a Christmas vacation, a tradition that will be fondly remembered. We will strive to carry out the legacy he built for us.

As we reflect on Gerardo’s life, we are reminded of the words of Todd Rundgren, “A million old soldiers will fade away but a dream goes on forever.” Gerardo played his role with grace, integrity, and an unwavering sense of purpose. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, the justice he sought in his legal career, the beauty he captured through his films and photographs, and the laughter and love he shared with his family and friends.

Gerardo Solon Gutierrez will be remembered not just for his accomplishments, but for the warmth and light he brought into the world. His memory will be a beacon for all who seek to live a life filled with passion, love, and the pursuit of knowledge. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit continues to inspire and guide us. Rest in paradise, dad, grandpa, uncle G, godfather and beloved friend, knowing that your story is one that will be told for generations to come.
