Geraldine Sceviour (née Shortall)

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Geraldine Mary Sceviour (née Shortall), aged 86, in the presence of her daughter and granddaughters on Friday, July 25th, 2025 at the Health Sciences Centre.

Predeceased by her husband John (Jack), parents Ronald and Stella Shortall (née Nugent), stepfather James Grouchey and daughter-in-law Brenda Sceviour.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her children: Ron (Susan), John (Jane Maher) and Heather (George O’Brien); grandchildren Scott (Krysta) Sceviour, James (Jennah) Sceviour, Mitchell Sceviour, Kayleigh and Erin O’Brien (Tyler Randell), great-grandchildren Jack and Wyatt Sceviour and Jade and Jack Sceviour; special niece Christina (Gavin Loveless) and their children Joseph and Sadie, step-siblings: Robert Grouchey (Corsie), James Grouchey (Ruth), Bernadette Moyse (Bill) and Rosemary McCarthy (Michael) and their families.

For those of you who had the pleasure of knowing Geraldine, you would know how boastful she was of the wonderful city she resided in – Mount Pearl. She maintained a beautiful connection with her community up until her last few months of good health. This is quite easy to do when you have an infinite level of charm and wit – a likeness she shared with her large group of friends, “the girls”, as she called them. From events with the Mount Pearl Seniors Independence Group to the dining room of Tim Horton’s on Old Placentia, you could hear her boisterous laugh. If you could catch her on her travels between places within the city, you were always greeted with a wink and a bright smile, overflowing with an indescribable level of warmth.

Even in her last months of life, she continued to win the hearts of those who cared for her. She had a sense of humor that brightened the, sometimes, dark halls of the hospital. We are very appreciative of the care she received from the staff of the Emergency Department, 4NorthB, the General Surgery staff/residents and even some of the patients (Steve) at the Health Sciences Centre. Thank-you for your kindness.

Visitation will be held at Barretts Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Ave., Mount Pearl on Tuesday, July 29th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Mass will be held at Our Lady, Queen of Families, 110 Ashford Drive, Mount Pearl on Wednesday, July 30th at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Topsail Road.

Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her name can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, Our Lady, Queen of Families Parish, Mount Pearl.
