George McCabe
George M. McCabe, 92, of Taberg, passed away June 29, 2025 after a short illness with his loving family by his side. He was born on February 14, 1933 in Little Orleans, Allegany County, Maryland. George was the son of the late Michael E. McCabe and Effie Hartman McCabe. He married his beloved wife Angela Rose Jeffalone McCabe on August 11, 1963. George was predeceased by his loving wife, Angela.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he honorably served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He also served special assignments with Air America and Area 51. He flew into 67 countries during his time in the Air Force. Some notable metals he earned: Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Medal, USAF Combat Action Medal, Air Force Combat Readiness Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, U.S. Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, ROK Korean War Service Medal, UN Korean Service Medal, Joint Service Cmd. Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, RVN Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, AF Presidential Unit Citation, AF Outstanding Unit Award, AF Overseas Service Short Tour, AF Longevity Service, AF NCO Professional Military Education Graduate, AF Small Arms Expert, Vietnam 50th Anniversary Comm., Republic of Vietnam Service Comm., Combat Service Comm., Armed Forces Marksman Comm., Vietnam TET Campaign Comm., Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Comm., U.S. Air Force Comm.,USAF Outstanding Unit Award Comm., Presidential Unit Citation Comm.
His commitment to his country was unwavering, and his service left a lasting legacy of courage and dedication. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1309 and the Western Shrine Club. After retiring from the Air Force he owned and operated GM Enterprises.
He is survived by his four children, daughter Mary Ann Cook and son-in-law Kevin Cook, of Taberg, daughter Joelle Campbell, of Rome, son Michael and daughter-in-law Anna Marie McCabe, of New York Mills, daughter Ann Marie and son-in-law Lou Mott, of Bluffton SC; grandchildren, Ashley Carter (Cook), Pam (Campbell) and Jeff Lemieux, Larry and Jill Campbell, Gio McCabe, Kathleen McCabe and Hayden Smith, Louis and Angelica Mott; great-grandchildren Averie and Cooper Carter, Tyler and Maddie Lemieux, Devin Lemieux and Hannah Stepp, and Brady Lemieux, Macayla and Grayson Campbell; great great grandson’s, Jameson and Coleson Lemieux, a very special nephew Barney Piper, and his Terrace at Woodland family.
He was predeceased by six sisters: Edna McCabe, Mollie Robinette, Arveda Piper, Elva Slider, Effie Slider and Viola Jessen and five brothers: Arlie Ray, Michael E. Jr., William Patrick, Raymond John and Roy James McCabe, son-in-law Ryckman Campbell, and nephew William (Bill) Slider.
Calling hours will be held on Monday July 7th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, New York. A service will follow at 6:00 p.m. His final resting place will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date, where he will receive full military honors.
