Fred J. Stevens, 73, of Prospect Park, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 21, 2025. Born on December 19, 1951, Fred grew up in Ridgewood and was a graduate of Ridgewood High School, Class of 1970.
After high school, Fred pursued his love of music at the University of Cincinnati before serving his country in the United States Air Force where he specialized in Meteorological Equipment Repair.
Following his service, he earned his Bachelor’s degree and Teaching Certification from William Paterson College in Wayne, NJ, and briefly shared his love of learning as a mathematics teacher in the Irvington Public School System. Fred later built a long and dedicated career in retail, working as part of the supermarket union for FoodTown, where he remained until retirement.
Fred cherished time with family and friends. He fondly recalled childhood summers spent in Wildwood, NJ, holiday barbecues at Longwood Lake, and always looked forward to Doug’s Christmas lasagna. A loyal New York Yankees fan, Fred never missed a chance to cheer on his team (and made sure to share his opinions after each game with a select few family members over the phone). He was a quiet, generous man who found the most joy in his family, especially his beloved grandchildren, who brought light into his life.
Fred is survived by his children, Alison Lamazza (Christopher), Brian (Sha’ree Jandreau),
Douglas (Alena); his grandchildren, Cameron, Julia, and Jason; and his sister, Patricia Kozakiewicz (Robert). He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love by all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. at Feeney Funeral Home, 232 Franklin Ave, Ridgewood, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or The Wounded Warrior Project.
