Floyd Brown
- April 29, 2025

Floyd Lee Brown, born January 16, 1944, to John and Flora Brown, departed this life on April 27, 2025. He was born and raised in Atlantic City, NJ and attended the local public schools. He graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1963 and worked as a chef and auto mechanic.
He married Clara Lee Winstead June 11, 1966, and from this union two daughters were born. His career at Verizon (formerly Ma Bell/Bell Telephone/Bell Atlantic) began in 1969 and he retired after 33 years of service. As a young man he enjoyed drag racing and obtained trophies for his accomplishments. As a family man, he enjoyed vacations, annual 4th of July picnics, and engaging in multiple sports activities that included bowling, fishing, bike riding, roller skating, jogging, tennis, and wall ball. Most of all, he enjoyed cutting and splitting wood and riding his Harley. In his later years he enjoyed monthly breakfasts with his retiree friends and community activities with the Newtonville Martin Luther King, Jr. Center Seniors group. As much as he enjoyed all these things, none of them topped his love for music and his love for God.
“Bootsie”, as he was affectionately called by all he knew and all who loved him, attended Holy Trinity Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and sang on the choir. He was also a member of Union Temple Baptist Church of Atlantic City, NJ, where he served in the Men’s and Feeding ministries, and Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church of Newtonville, NJ. In 2018 Bootsie, later known as “Pop Brown”, made Jesus in the Midst Ministries his church home and grew leaps and bounds in the Word and in the love of God. He truly was not ashamed of the Gospel and changed from a man of few words to a man who could not tell it all.
Bootsie was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Susie Maisonave, Overseer Porter S. Brown, Sr., and Massey Brown; in-laws, John Maisonave and Sheila Brown; and close friend and brother-in-law, Richard N. Winstead, Sr.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of almost 59 years, Clara Lee Brown; daughters, Crystal El (Faisal) and Catrice Brown; grandsons,Tony Timberlake III (Monique), Daniel El (Chanel), and Joseph El; great-grandsons, Myles and Mico Flowers-Timberlake; great-granddaughters, Paris and Mya El; siblings, Johnnie L. Brown (Linda) and Joyce Howard (Rev. Dr. John); god daughters, Maureen Bowen and Larteshia Brown; lifelong friends, Martin “Skip” Dorsey, Jr., Leon “Bubba” Riggins, Jr., and Harry Phillips; brother-in-law, James E. Winstead, Jr. (Brenda); and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
