Evangelia Madias

Evangelia Madias passed away on December 26 with her sons at her side; she was 89. Born on the island of Chios, Greece, Evangelia was the fourth of eight children. Her childhood was marked by hardship and resilience. After growing up with her grandmother during the German occupation of Chios, she and her sisters emigrated from Greece to join their parents and brothers who had immigrated before the war to Detroit. There, she met and married Theodore (Ted), and together they built a loving home.

In 1966, the family moved to Novato, where Evangelia became an integral part of the community. She was a cornerstone of Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church, dedicating countless hours to the annual Greek Festival. She also volunteered at West Novato School and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Known for her warm smile and generous spirit, Evangelia welcomed everyone into her home with open arms and delicious food. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family and tending to her garden.

Evangelia was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Ted, and her siblings John Madias, Maritsa Maganas, Lela Perivolaris, Alexandra Madias, and Doris Petsis. She is survived by her children and their families: Dino, Marti, Theo, Alex, and Robyn; Mike, Laurie, Robert, Christopher and Michael; John, Kathy, Lia, Joanna and Oren. She is also survived by her brothers Marcus and Nick as well as numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Novato or to By the Bay Health in Larkspur, CA. A Trisagion service will be held at Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church on December 30 at 9:00 AM. A funeral will follow at 10:00 AM with a reception to follow.
