Demetris Ramon Burke, Jr, lovingly known as “D.J.” was a radiant light in the lives of those who knew him. On July 31, 2025, at ECU Health Hospital in Windsor, North Carolina. D.J. peacefully took the hand of our Heavenly father and entered into eternal rest.
Born on April 5, 1989, to Allisa Wilson and Demetris Burke Sr., D.J. lived a life full of love, laughter, and warmth. At the age of 36, he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, unforgettable memories, and a spirit that touched countless hearts.
Demetris received his education through the Bertie County Public School System, where he was known for his vibrant personality and athletic talents. At an early age he joined St. Francis Baptist Church, Windsor, NC. He had a deep love for sports and was an avid basketball player, often seen on the court showing off his skills. Though he was affectionately known as Aunt Amy’s sweet baby, he surprised many with his unwavering loyalty to the Minnesota Vikings, choosing them over the Dallas Cowboys!
Above all else, Demetris loved to dance. Whether in a room full of people or standing alone, if there was music, he was going to “cut a step!” His energy was contagious, and his presence lit up every space he entered.
Demetris had a magnetic personality. People naturally gravitated towards him. His love for family ran deep, especially the special bond he shared with his cousins. He was the best uncle anyone could ask for to his nephew, Trevon, “T.J”, and a devoted father who absolutely adored his son Elijah. Spending time with him bought Demetris the greatest joy and pride.
Demetris leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted, loving, and dedicated mother, Allisa Wilson (Zeke) and his father, Demetris Burke Sr. (Amy). His only child, Elijah Demetris Burke; his grandmother, Alfreda Bond, of the home place (Reginald–deceased); his godmother, Sadie White; sisters, Carlisa Spivey Windsor, NC and Chiquita Bell, Atlanta, Georgia; his brother, Kenyon Gaston, Greensboro, NC; his aunts and uncles, Towana Cherry (Mike) Winterville, NC, Monique Bond (James) Chesapeake, VA, Amy Roulhac, Greensboro, NC, Jasmine Bond Windsor, NC, TaNaja Bond, Williamston, NC, Lakesha Lee-Outlaw (Gerald), Greenville, NC, Patricia Ferguson (Steven) Powellsville, NC, Keith Urquhart (Sandra) Ahoskie, NC, Arnold Burke (Imogene) Aulander, NC, and Micheal Burke (Lashondra) Fayetteville, NC. Demetris also leaves to cherish his memory, his special great aunt,Patricia Greene “Aunt Pat”. The brotherhood that was shared amongst his special friends, JD Wesson, Shiquan Swain, JaQuise Smith, Glenn Bond, and James Smallwood will always be admired and respected.
Preceding him in death is his beloved little brother, Trevon Delando Powell, his maternal great-grandparents, Clara and Maxwell Outlaw, and his paternal grandparents, Kay Francis Burden and McCoy Burke, and godmother, Flossie Outlaw.
The proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child”, is deeply believed and practiced in our family. Demetris was blessed to have two mothers that happen to be sisters. Aunt Amy, DJ loved you and appreciated you ruling with a STRONG hand. Your devotion and support over the years along with the mentorship was not in vain. Your hearts were intertwined with love, compassion, and support and his spirit will remain with you forever.
