Delbert Burgess
DELBERT BENJAMIN BURGESS, 91, of the Little Prater section of Grundy, VA, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at his home following an extended illness. Born in Cabin Creek, WV, he was the son of the late Harman and Hester Ann (Perdue) Burgess. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was a member of Poplar Creek Church of Christ. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was a retired coal miner. After retiring, he worked for S&S Paving, Shortt & Son Paving, Vandyke Construction and had a lawn care business. Delbert enjoyed working on vehicles, woodworking, grapevine wreaths, fishing, ginsenging, yellow root and most of all, spending time with his family. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Marie (Fuller) Burgess; Daughter: Angela Leann Burgess; Great Granddaughter: Jamie Delilah Stanley; Father & Mother-in-Law: Henry Lee and Jonas Ann “Jan” (Jackson) Heath; Sister: Letha Marie Burgess (Woodrow Wilson) Bevins; Brother: Franklin D. “Toe Head” (Ella Innis) Burgess; Special Friends: Rex Spencer, Dave Shortt, John Shortt Hoss Deel, Kylie Ward, and Sonny Vandyke.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 34-years, Candy Sugar (Heath) Burgess of Grundy, VA; Daughters: Mary Magdalene Burgess (Roger) Grizzle of Grundy, VA; Betty Sue Burgess (John) Ramey of Oakwood, VA, Ashley Paige Burgess (Jermey) Harris of Mouthcard, KY, Alyson Paula Brooke Burgess (Blane Wilson) of Springfield, MN; Grandchildren: Lisa Grizzle (Sarah Rogers), Jessica Grizzle, Bradley Stanley, Victoria “Shell” Stanley (Jessee Counts), Zoey Harris, Kameron Harris “Papaw’s Buddy”, Wyatt Wilson and Natalee Varney; Great-Grandchildren: Joshua, Jodie, Julia, Reid, Elijah and Victor; Sister-in-Law: Honey Heath (Charlie) Wolford; Special Friends: Pollard Shortt, Susie Ramey, Steve Vandyke, Josh Snead, Chris Shortt, David Ratliff, Mary Ruth Spencer and host of others.
Also, survived by several nieces, nephews great nieces and great nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Saturday evening at 6:00 P.M. with services at 7:00 P.M.
Funeral Services for DELBERT BENJAMIN BURGESS will be held, at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Sunday July 13, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. with Evg. Jim Edd Belcher and William Profitt officiating with burial to follow in Parrot-Deel Cemetery on Greenbrier.
Active Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Men of Poplar Creek Church of Christ.
