Darin Gene Hudson, 51, died suddenly at home in Grand Island, Nebraska, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. His passing occurred after an illness of several years.
Darin was born August 8, 1973, in Gothenburg to Dan and Karen (Ross) Hudson.
He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1992 and attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He worked for the Grand Island Independent as a web developer and then for IdeaBank Marketing, based in Hastings. In more recent years he operated a small business.
Darin was a car enthusiast and had designed and produced intricate scale models of his childhood home and Dawson County landmarks using a 3D printer. He always had a project going, whether that was melting and casting aluminum in a furnace or building things out of wood.
Darin was known around Grand Island drive thru’s as the man who would often pay for the vehicle behind him especially if it was a family or a vehicle full of kids.
Gothenburg residents may remember the injury he received when he was 12 years old. He was playing at the partially demolished power plant there near Lake Helen. He fell from a high wall and landed on a bolt set in the concrete below, badly breaking his leg. The injury made news, and he spent many weeks at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Darin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Guy and Astrid (Anderson) Hudson and Robert and Harriette (Sykes) Ross, and his father, Dan Hudson.
He is survived by his mother, Karen (Ross) Hudson of rural Gothenburg; brother and sister-in-law, David Hudson and Deanna Walz, of Greenwood, Nebraska; and a niece and nephew.
Funeral Services will be held, 11:00 am, Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, 620 10th St, Gothenburg, NE, with Pastor Brent Graves officiating.
Burial will follow in the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Nebraska Kidney Association, 212 S. 74th Street, Omaha, NE 68114, or the American Diabetes Association.
