FRANKLIN — Danial R. Smith, 63, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, in Bangor. Born on Sept. 1, 1961, in Castine, Dan was the son of Ronald and Cynthia (Wessel) Smith. He was raised in Franklin, where he spent his entire life rooted deeply in the community he loved.
A 1979 graduate of Sumner Memorial High School, Dan went on to earn his degree from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1984. Over the years, he worked a variety of jobs, including a memorable stint at Pat’s Pizza, before finding his professional home at The Jackson Laboratory. Dan took immense pride in his work and was especially honored to have recently received his 25-year service pin.
Dan had a lifelong passion for gardening, a keen interest in genealogy — especially tracing the Smith and Wessel family lines — and a deep love for animals. He cherished many pets throughout the years but held a special place in his heart for his last dog, Izzy, and his beloved cat, Hamish. One of his favorite memories in recent years was a 2019 trip to New Orleans, where he enjoyed the vibrant jazz scene.
Dan is survived by his sister, Mary Smith of Bangor; aunts Sandra Ingalls, Joan Smith, and Elaine Wessel; as well as many cousins and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, at Bayview Cemetery in Franklin, followed by celebration of life and refreshments at the Franklin Veterans Club, 4 Cards Crossing, Franklin. In keeping with Dan’s joyful spirit and colorful personality, attendees are encouraged to wear bright, fun Hawaiian-style shirts — just as Dan would have liked.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Ark Pope Memorial Animal Shelter, 60 Barber Lane, Cherryfield, ME 04622.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Ellsworth, where online condolences may be shared: www.bragdonkelley.com
