By Candy Duncan — What better way to celebrate our Nation’s 249th birthday than with a weekend loaded with special activities and patriotic events in Virginia City. Invite your family and friends treat them to a weekend of fun and nostalgia at one of the best Independence Day parties in Northern Nevada.

Start with a ride on the historic V&T Railroad. Our open-air cars offer breathtaking views of the high desert landscape as you travel on the original 1800s Comstock route. Check out the remnants of gold mines, the 400 ft original Tunnel #4 and keep your eyes peeled for wild mustangs. Your train ride is an immersive 35-minute experience narrated by our knowledgeable conductors. As a special treat, all riders on the 4th of July will receive a small American Flag so you can show off your patriotism. Fourth of July Trains will run all day, from 10:30 am to 5pm.

Your adventure begins at our original 1870’s passenger depot located at 166 F street in Virginia City, Nev.  Train tickets are $18 for adults, $9 for ages 5-12, and free for kids under 5 years old.  Our well-stock stocked gift shop also provides cool drinks, ice cream and the perfect souvenir of your weekend on the Comstock.

And there is plenty more to do in Virginia City to celebrate this great holiday weekend. On Friday, July 4, at noon, watch the Fourth of July Parade, go shopping in the afternoon and enjoy a free concert at 6pm with David John and the Comstock Cowboys. All capped off with Virginia City’s Fireworks Spectacular at dusk.

On Saturday July 5, you can experience “A Ticket to Tomahawk” a murder mystery on the V&T Railroad, based loosely on the 1950’s movie of the same name, Staring Ann Baxter and Dan Bailey, with a cameo performance by Marilyn Monroe.

Rides are at 6 and 7:30pm and feature the Fun Time Players.  Get ready to help solve the murder while enjoying a cool libation and tasty treats.  Tickets are $58 and can be purchased online at www.virginiatruckee.com. Be sure to check our website often, as we have more Murder Mystery theater trains planned for Sept. 27 and Nov. 8.
