Carson City deputies arrest man accused of shooting at two occupied apartments

An 18-year-old Reno man was arrested Thursday, July 3 for multiple felony offenses after allegedly shooting a firearm into two North Edmonds Drive apartment units, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.

Zay’l Jackson was taken into custody in Reno following an investigation in the shooting the left bullet holes in two apartments, one of which was occupied by a mother and her a 9-year-old child.

Jackson was booked for suspicion of two counts discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, assault with a deadly weapon, challenging a fight with a deadly weapon and child abuse/neglect with a deadly weapon.

According to the booking report, on July 3, 1:40 a.m. deputies were sent to the 1400 block of North Edmonds for a welfare check. A female advised someone was threatening to shoot up their house. On arrival, patrol deputies spoke with the reporting party who advised the deputies took too long and they did not want any assistance. While at the location, a patrol deputy observed a subject dressed in dark colored clothing and wearing a ski mask run into an apartment.

The subject (a juvenile male) came out of the residence and admitted to patrol deputies he was wearing a ski mask because there were people outside who had been threatening to fight and that he didn’t want them to know who he was, according to the report.

At around 3 a.m. patrol responded back to the 1400 block of North Edmonds for a shots fired call. An occupant of an apartment called 911 and advised there was a bullet hole in his living room and bedroom. It was later learned the occupants of another apartment — a mother and 9-year-old child — also had a bullet hole in their residence, which they discovered when they woke up.

Patrol deputies observed a person walking in the 1400 block of North Edmonds and he was detained due to the prior encounter with him as he was wearing a ski mask. The male juvenile advised he heard a loud bang and went downstairs to check on his parents in their apartment unit, which is when at the same time patrol officers arrived.

The juvenile advised he did not know who had taken the shots, but he said it would have been the other subjects from earlier who he said had threatened to shoot his residence, the report states.

After speaking with others in the investigation, it was learned the male juvenile with the ski mask had confronted several subjects earlier in a verbal argument and told the subjects to leave, which prompted them to say they were going to shoot the residence, according to the report.

Deputies continued investigating, and learned the problem began on Wednesday at around 11 p.m. and involved multiple people walking and shining lights into the juvenile’s residence. The juvenile said his stepdad yelled at the people as he thought they were other juveniles he had prior issues with. It was learned those issues are unrelated to the shooting, the report states.

The juvenile male told deputies he got into a verbal argument with three to six subjects, telling them to ignore his parents yelling. The juvenile said one of the subjects, from a local boxing club, called him by his nickname and that as the subjects left, one of them said he would shoot up his “crib,” the report states.

After the subjects left, the juvenile said he spoke with one of the subjects he had argued with on an Instagram video call. That person was later identified as the shooting suspect, Zay’l Jackson.

The juvenile stated he had issues with Jackson as he had made threats toward him and his family, the report states. The juvenile said the two talked about the original argument outside with him and his parents. He said Zay’l Jackson was wanting an apology due to how they were treated by his family. The juvenile told deputies he and Jackson talked about making plans to fight the next day in a boxing ring or in the street, the report states.

He told deputies that during the video call, Zay’l Jackson flashed an AR or AK style rifle in the video. The juvenile said he told Jackson he would not get an apology and that he can come over and do what he needed to do since he wasn’t going to get an apology, the report states. The juvenile also told deputies Zay’l Jackson may be associated to a Reno area boxing club.

The juvenile continued, telling deputies that after the shooting happened at around 3 a.m., he went outside and went to a neighbor’s residence where he took a recording of himself and the bullet holes in order to tell the shooter that he missed him, got the wrong house and to try again, according to the report.

The juvenile gave consent to search his residence and Instagram account on his computer but told deputies there would be no conversations between him and the alleged shooter as they disappeared right after the shooting happened, the report states.

During an interview with the deputy, the juvenile obtained a screen shot that his mother took off the suspect’s Instagram profile, which he said was the man who threatened to shoot his residence. An Instagram post on Beast Mode Boxing account tagged a post commenting the user-name as suspect Zay’l Jackson, the report states.

An exigent request for a phone number associated to Jackson indicated his phone number was near the 1400 block of North Edmonds in Carson City at 3 a.m. Two spent bullet casings consistent with an AR style rifle were located on North Edmonds Drive north of 1400 Edmonds.

The report states probable cause was determined to arrest Jackson if located for challenging a fight with a deadly weapon as he was in direct communication with the juvenile via Instagram and flashed an AR style rifle during the video call.

Probable cause was also determined after the suspect spoke about making plans to fight with the juvenile; making it assault with a deadly weapon and discharging of a firearm into an occupied dwelling after gunshots went through two apartment units. Probable cause was determined because Jackson had allegedly returned to the same location after making threats to shoot the residence, the report states.

The report notes this is also probable cause to arrest Jackson for child endangerment as he allegedly shot through an apartment that was occupied by a mother and her 9-year-old son.

Deputies learned Jackson was associated with a Talus Way address in Reno. The Reno Gang Unit was called to assist. Suspect Jackson and a passenger were located in a vehicle and detained.

During a vehicle search, deputies located an AR Magpul buttstock and plastic Scheels bag containing multiple loose .556 ammunition rounds and three boxes of .556 ammunition rounds with a receipt, the report states. Jackson was placed into custody and interviewed under Miranda. His vehicle was later seized and towed to the Reno Police Department. Bail: $75,000 cash only.

Note: We will do a separate story later in the day on other arrests from the holiday weekend.
