Gusty winds and cool temperatures continue to dominate weather conditions Saturday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms expected through the afternoon in the Tahoe Basin and the potential for light rain into the western Nevada foothills and Carson City areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Gusty winds continue to impact the region and firefighting efforts on the Conner Fire in Douglas County. Meanwhile, temperatures well below normal will continue this weekend before warmer weather returns next week.

Temperatures around Carson City at 3 p.m., Saturday hovered around 55-56 degrees, while temperatures around South Lake Tahoe were in the upper 40s. Along the higher elevations around Tahoe, snow has fallen as seen in the photo above at the summit of Mount Rose Highway, SR-431.

For those heading outside for evening activities Saturday around Carson City, it may be a good idea to dress for the weather. Temperatures are expected to warm up to around 60-61 by 6 p.m. in the capital city.

Isolated showers will continue Saturday around Pyramid Lake and in the Tahoe area. Accumulations with this system have been light, with totals between 0.05-0.15″ around Tahoe and northern Washoe counties, according to the weather service.

Though winds peaked Friday with the passage of the cold front, gusty winds continue throughout the region with wind gusts up to 24 mph around Carson City.

Temperatures Saturday are around 15-20 degrees cooler compared to this time Friday and up to 30 degrees cooler compared to 2 days ago, NWS forecasters said. With a cold airmass in place, freezing temperatures are likely Saturday night in the eastern Sierra, with lows well into the 20s.

Weather models show a trough pattern remaining over the area through Tuesday. We’ll have a slow warmup in the coming week, with temperatures returning to seasonal averages by Wednesday, NWS forecasters said.
