Carl Schmitt

Carl A. Schmitt, 85, of Springfield, IL, passed away on October 13, 2025 at Cedarhurst Senior Living in Springfield. Carl was born on June 13, 1940, to Louis and Mary E. (Hamrick) Schmitt.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Schmitt; and one brother-in-law, Hank Malkus.

He is survived by his siblings, Barbara Malkus of St. Louis, MO, Donald Schmitt of Wood Dale, IL, and Mary Lynn (Dean) Hoffer of Naperville, IL, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

Carl is a United States Marine Corps veteran who served from 1957 to 1958. He also received his associate’s degree from Lincoln Land Community College.

Carl retired from the State of Illinois, Department of Mental Health, but previously had worked for the Department of Public Aid. Before Carl worked for the State of Illinois, he was very proud to have been the owner/operator of the Stride Rite Shoe Store. He had also worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was an over-the-road truck driver.

In retirement, he enjoyed watching his favorite football team, the Green Bay Packers.

Visitation: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm, Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Service: 12:00 pm, Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Reverend Brendan Gibson officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars or the American Legion.
