Cain Chan

For nearly 97 years, Cain Chan brought kindness and quiet joy to everyone who knew him. His friends and family remember him for his gentle spirit and delightfully unexpected sense of humor—perhaps best known through his lighthearted submissions published as “The Chuckle” in the Modesto Bee, back in the days of printed newspapers.

At his assisted living community, fellow residents fondly recall Cain’s calm presence, his ever-sweet smile, and his enduring love of chocolate ice cream.

Born in Hong Kong, Cain lived there until 1970, spending several years studying in England and Scotland. In 1970, he, his beloved wife Yvonne, and their daughter Andrea moved first to San Francisco and soon after settled in Modesto, where they built a warm, loving home and a lifetime of cherished memories.

In Modesto, Cain played an instrumental role in establishing the radiation oncology department at Memorial Hospital, where he worked with dedication and compassion until his retirement.

Cain and Yvonne shared a deep love of travel, exploring every continent—including Antarctica. In his younger days, ships were simply a practical means of travel; later in life, they became a source of joy as the couple embraced recreational cruising together.

Dad, I hope you and Mom are together again. I love you very much.

A visitation will be held on Friday, October 17th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Franklin & Downs Funeral Home in Modesto. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation (www.tzuchi.us), the American Heart Association (heart.org), or a charity meaningful to you.
