Betty Sue Johnson, 86, of Granbury, Texas, passed away on December 13, 2024. She was born on July 3, 1938, in Byers, Texas, to George Dewey Wright and Espea Estella Jones. Betty Sue was preceded in death by her husband, J.V. (Johnny) Johnson, to whom she was married for 60 years, her daughter Brenda Tucker, and her brother Danny Wright. Betty Sue lived a full and vibrant life in Granbury, Texas. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Prior to settling in Granbury, Betty traveled the world with her husband, who served in the military. Together, they lived in or visited places such as England, New York, and Guam, where they enjoyed scuba diving and even swam with sharks. After his military service, they settled in Byers, Texas, where Betty leased and helped run a drive-in restaurant with her husband. They later moved to Fort Worth, Texas, with their girls before eventually purchasing their forever home in Granbury, Texas.
Later in life, Betty Sue was known for her passion in gardening, her love of front porch sitting, bird watching, watermelon eating, fish fries by the river, and her delight in Christmas traditions, especially wrapping gifts in her signature red-foiled paper. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her endless joy.
Betty Sue’s competitive spirit was legendary, whether she “played to kill” in the game of Wahoo, slyly cheating at cards, or enjoying a round of Bingo. Ever the penny pincher, she saved her Bingo winnings to share with her grandkids.
She is survived by her brother, Lewis Franklin Wright; her sister, Wilma Rickard; her daughters, Debra Waters and Starlene (Tommy) Grice; her grandchildren, Ashlee (James) Cook, Krystal (Preston) Cagle, Paige (Kevin) Goforth, and Evan Grice; and her great-grandchildren, Kamryn (Michael) Cooper, Hayden Cook, Annabella Cagle, Shelbi Cook, and Harrison Cagle. A woman of strong opinions and precise instructions, she had a knack for ensuring everything was done just right.
Betty Sue will be remembered for her fierce love, strong spirit, and the cherished memories she created. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a life well-lived.
Services will be held at the National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX, on December 27, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.
