Betty Fields

Betty Wheeler Fields, a cherished educator and beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6, 2025, in Hermitage, Tennessee. Born on March 2, 1932, in Thomas County, Georgia, she lived a life dedicated to education and family, reaching the age of 93.

Betty pursued her passion for learning at the University of Georgia, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree, and continued her studies at Troy University, where she obtained a master’s degree. Her commitment to education was evident throughout her career as she taught reading in public schools and shared her knowledge and love for teaching at Troy University.

She was a resident of McKendree Retirement Village in Hermitage, Tennessee, and had previously resided in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where she cultivated many friendships and left a lasting impact on her community.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, John Wheeler, Sr. and Addie Phillips Wheeler, and her devoted husband, Charlie Fields.

Her legacy lives on through her surviving family: her daughter, Kim Williams of Hermitage, Tennessee; her son, Chip Fields and his wife, Sherry of Clarkesville, Georgia; and her cherished grandchildren, Taylor Fields, Reid Fields, and Addie Williams, who brought immense joy to her life.

The family will hold a graveside service to honor her memory on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, Betty had requested those wishing to make a memorial donation are asked to consider, Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, North Carolina 28607.
