It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Betty L. Duncan, a beloved mother whose love will be deeply missed but never forgotten. At the age of 93, three years into her tenth decade, she departed this world peacefully on May 31, 2025. She was the daughter of Lillian Morgan and Carl Vestal.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bron W. Duncan Jr., of 60 years, and her brothers, Carl Morgan and John Morgan; her son-in-law, Philip Sironko; and her grandson-in-law, Mark Sutphin.
She is survived by her son, Bron W. Duncan III (Lakricia); a daughter, Evelyn D. Sironko; and three grandchildren: Rebecca L. Gonzales (Cleto), Benjamin D. Sironko (Susie), and Andrew D. Sironko (Kathryn).
Born with a heart full of love, she dedicated her life to nurturing and supporting her family. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives she graced with her presence.
Betty was born in Damascus, Virginia, on April 24, 1932. She attended the Damascus Rock School and went on to travel the world with her husband for nearly twenty years. Following Bron’s retirement, Betty was adamant about returning to her hometown of Damascus, VA. She was often heard saying, ” She had no desire to travel because her husband had shown her the world. “
From 1963 until 1968, Betty served as a Red Cross Gray Lady while living in Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada, and West Edgecombe County, North Carolina, Betty and Bron were avid members of the Newfoundland Avalon Stompers Square Dance Club. As Betty was a fine seamstress she designed and created matching Square Dance costumes for her and Bron.
Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Damascus for nearly 50 years. Blessed with a beautiful voice, she enjoyed participating in the choir and was an honored Vacation Bible School teacher and volunteer for many decades. Betty especially enjoyed partnering with Bron as a passionate co-teacher of the Good News Club at Rhea Valley Elementary.
Demonstrating her support for Bron and his military career she joined the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary. She served the Town of Damascus as a volunteer on the Parks & Recreation committee during the early years of the Trail Days celebration. She often opened her home to accommodate special needs hikers during the celebration. As an active member of the Damascus Senior Citizens Center, she enjoyed playing her mandolin and occasionally touring with the center’s band. She was a dedicated member of the Damascus Red Hat Society and enjoyed their quest to” get the most out of life.”
In place of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her honor to the First Baptist Church of Damascus, VA, her second family.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Bristol Rehab and Memory Care. They were dedicated to creating a loving and caring home away from home for Betty.
A private memorial service will be held later in the year to celebrate her remarkable life, surrounded by those who loved her most.
Condolences for the family may be sent and viewed by visiting www.garrettfuneralhome.com. Duncan and her family are in the care of Garrett Funeral Home.(276) 475-3631.
