Adrian Mendes

Born March 5th 1929, in Metropolitan California, Adrian Francis Mendes led a full and rewarding life passing away shortly after completing his 96th revolution around the sun on April 20, 2025.

Adrian was the youngest son of Ermalinda and Joe Mendes and had one brother, Harold. He grew up in Eureka, California attending both Eureka High School and Humboldt State College. After graduating in 1953 from Humboldt State, Adrian married his college sweetheart, Joan Palmer, and relocated to Walnut Creek. Uncle Sam then called and he spent two years serving in the Army. Upon his return, he and Joan led the Administration of the Palmer School in Walnut Creek for 31 years.

Rotary International had always been an important part of Adrian’s life. He was the President of the Rotary Club of Walnut Creek in 1965 and served as District Governor in 1984. Joan and Adrian traveled the world promoting and representing the ideals of Rotary. Through those experiences they made lasting friendships both near and far.

Adrian’s life was replete with many interests. Gardening, flower arranging, cooking, dancing, napkin folding and crocheting were just a few of his creative outlets. And with a twinkle in his eye, he was always eager to share his experiences with a story or two.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Joan, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage, as well as by his parents and his brother.

He is survived by his three children, Sam (Susan), Lance (Kristin) and Elizabeth (John), five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Donna, and several nieces and nephews.

Donations to The Rotary Foundation, in Adrian’s memory, will help spread the exuberance that he held in his heart for Rotary International.

Following Adrian’s wishes, the family will hold a private memorial.
