9th annual BOOnanza trick-or-treat returns to Mills Park in Carson City

Carson City, NV – Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department invites the community to an evening of family fun at the 9th annual Carson City Boonanza event on Thursday, October 30, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mills Park (1111 E. William St.). Parking will be available by the Community Center and Aquatic Facility, and at Carson High School in North Parking Lot B on Saliman, and in the South Parking Lot on Saliman and Robinson. The crosswalk on Saliman will have crossing guards during the event.

Dress up in costume and trick-or-treat at decorated booths along the meandering paths at Mills Park. Train rides will be free during the event. Various booths will offer free activities and games, food trucks will have tasty treats for purchase, and, of course, there will be loads of free candy and goodies for the kids.

Boonanza Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips for Parents:

1. Take a picture of your kids in their costumes before heading out, as well as keeping a recent recognizable photo. Consider costumes that are bright and/or reflective and say “flame resistant” on the label.

2. When you arrive at the Boonanza event, locate the Info/First Aid booths – these are good places to go if you get separated from your family.

3. Teach young children to identify community helpers such as Parks, Recreation & Open Space staff at the Boonanza event; police officers; fire fighters; paramedics; and/or other trusted adults. Consider playing a game to practice identifying the difference between a first responder and someone in a first responder costume. Identify both the uniforms and the vehicles of common community helpers.

4. Always accompany young children. If your older children are trick-or-treating alone, plan and review a route that is acceptable to you and plan when and how to check in throughout the night.

5. Help young children memorize their parents’ names and cell phone numbers and/or keep parents’ contact info in their pockets while trick-or-treating.

6. Cross the street as a group in established crosswalks and talk with your kids about the risk of “distracted walking” – make eye contact; don’t just assume cars will stop.

Sponsored by Southwest Gas, United Rentals, Quick Space, Carson City Toyota, Nevada Health Link, and PCC Structurals. Boonanza is good old-fashioned Halloween fun.
