Stephen Richard Asbell was a loving husband, father, grandfather and father figure to many children that crossed his path. He passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025 from a brain tumor. Steve was born in Enid, OK to Richard and Lois Margaret Asbell.
Steve loved his extended family, church families and Ukrainian friends who felt like family. Music was a large piece of his adult life singing on Praise Teams for 3 decades. He led bible classes and studies to children and adults. He participated in children’s musicals, Vacation Bible School and “Acting Up” adult plays to teach biblical principles. He served ‘care receivers’ through the Stephens Ministry. He served in the ‘Square Mile’ ministry helping Denver Hispanic churches and through the Angel Tree program. Steve went on a mission trip to Juarez, Mexico with high schoolers and two mission trips to Kherson, Ukraine with adults. He loved to cook so he constantly invited new and old friends over for meals. A great passion especially after retirement was to travel domestically and internationally with family and friends. His favorite locations were the Caribbean islands, Ukraine, Europe, Peru, Mexico, Australia, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii. All of Steve’s activities showed a generous heart.
In addition to Laura, his wife of 33 years, Steve is survived by his mother, Margaret Day; two sisters Sheri Asbell and Marcia Plemmons; four sons Wade, Cullen, Darren and Zane; nine grandchildren, Brenden, Mallerie, Ethan, Jackson, Brooklyn, Baylee, Elena, Bria and Hunter plus an uncle, aunt, niece, nephews and cousins.
Steve graduated from Ozark Christian College (1975) and University of Central Oklahoma. After nine years as a Youth Pastor at Draper Park Christian Church in Oklahoma, he moved to Colorado and eventually landed at the Colorado Department of Revenue. After rotating in several departments, he ran the new E-filing department that grew over the years. Steve attended many National Symposiums with the other state managers to implement all the changes needed. Upon his retirement in 2021 as the E-filing Manager after 30 years of service, the state flew a Colorado flag for a day and presented it to Steve. After volunteering at Valley View Christian Church in Littleton, he was asked to be the Senior Adults Pastor in 2025.
Steve was actively involved in non-profits. He was on the Board of Trustees for Colorado Christian Service Camp (Camp Como), Treasurer for his timeshare Swan Mountain Resort, Treasurer for Recovery in Ukraine and volunteered along with his wife with Bridge of Hope Greater Denver.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Valley View Christian Church, 11004 Wildfield Lane, Littleton, CO on May 24, 2025 at 2 PM (valleyviewcc.com).
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Colorado Christian Service Camp (campcomo.com) or Bridge of Hope Greater Denver (greaterdenver.bridgeofhopeinc.org).
