Gertrude “Gertie” (Harrington) Weldon died Wednesday, March 5, 2025, Private family services will be held at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. The burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Gertie was born June 27, 1930, in Britta, Iowa, daughter of Robert and Anna (Lorenz) Harrington. Gertie graduated from Mount Mercy College in 1952 with a nursing degree, working at Mercy Medical Center for 40-plus years. Long after her retirement, her children would still hear from patients’ families who praised Gertie on the level of care and
compassion she provided to her loved ones. On October 20, 1952, she married the love of her life, Robert Weldon, in Britt, Iowa. They were happily married for 64 years, raising seven children.
Gertie loved spending time with her family. She loved gardening and grew many types of beautiful flowers. She had a generous heart and always took time for family, friends, and neighbors.
Survivors include her children, Mike (Judy), Margaret (Ron) Kirkpatrick, Shawn (Kathy Ahart), Tim (Cherie), James, Theres (Darren) Nelson, and Brian (Ter); eleven grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
Gertie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, parents, and five brothers and sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Catherine McAuley Center or St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Gertie’s family extends a sincere Thank-You to the staff at Northbrook Care Center, Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, and the staff at Mercy Medical Center.
