Dorothy Ann (Schmidt) Nus, 83, passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville, North Carolina following a period of declining health and then a massive stroke.

A native of Arlington, Iowa, Mrs. Nus resided in Ohio and Michigan before moving to Henderson County in 1993. Valedictorian of her high school class, she was selected for the State Honors band, playing French horn. At the University of Iowa she majored in nursing, receiving her BSN and graduating with honors.

She worked most of her professional career in the nursing field, lending her talents to Akron General and Hillcrest Hospitals in Ohio and Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, Michigan. She also worked in several home visiting nurse programs in Ohio, Michigan, and North Carolina. Following her retirement from nursing, she continued working for ten years as a seasonal H&R Block tax preparation professional in Hendersonville.

Mrs. Nus also led an extraordinary personal life. While in Michigan she served the Symphony League in St. Joseph, including one year as President. Very talented in crafts, she excelled in all aspects of home economics. She loved to cook, garden, quilt, and needlepoint, sewing not only her wedding dress, but her bridesmaids’ dresses as well (while earning a 4.0 that term of her senior year at college). Mrs. Nus was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Tryon, North Carolina and Bible Study Fellowship in several locations. Above all, she will be remembered as a very caring, family-oriented woman, who loved her husband, children and grandchildren with amazing dedication.

Mrs. Nus was the daughter of the late Alfred C. and Margaret (Lauck) Schmidt.

She was preceded in death by her older brother, Duane Schmidt; younger sister, Janice (Schmidt) Longmuir; and daughter-in-law, Jill Nus.

Survivors include her loving husband of 64 years, Alvin Nus; sons: Paul Nus and wife Nancy, Erich Nus, David Nus and wife Andra; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Nus will be held at 9:30 AM Saturday, December 14, 2024, in the chapel of Shuler Funeral Home in Hendersonville, North Carolina, with Pastor Thomas Olson officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home thirty minutes prior to the service.
