Elwood Edwards, the iconic voice behind AOL’s “You’ve got mail” notification, passed away at the age of 74 in New Bern, North Carolina. Originally a graphics supervisor and production manager for local TV stations, Edwards’ distinctive voice became synonymous with the early internet era. His simple, yet memorable phrases, recorded on a cassette player in his living room, became a cultural touchstone, even inspiring a film title. Despite his global fame, Edwards remained humble, continuing his career in television production and later as an Uber driver.
