Charles L. Mitchell, affectionately known as MoKie, was born on March 8, 1945, the eldest of 25 children of the late Charlie & Step-Mother Josephine Rabb. He was the only child of the late Alberta Jemison, who preceded him in death, February 1997.

 

MoKie grew up in Cleveland, where he developed a love for education, taking classes at Tri-C throughout his life. His spirited nature as a child led his mother to encourage him to join the military, where he served honorably and completed two tours in Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart as a non-commissioned officer.

 

After his military service, MoKie pursued a career as a social worker and later as a barber, a profession he embraced until his retirement. In 1963, he married Pamela Bradley, with whom he shared many cherished moments.

 

MoKie professed his faith at an early age at Mt. Gillion Baptist Church, attending with his mother. His vibrant personality made him beloved by all who knew him; he was a fierce protector of his family and friends.

 

MoKie’s passions included dancing, music, spaghetti westerns/gangster movies, chess, and reading. He passed away on September 24, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and camaraderie.

 

He is survived by his children, Sheirrod (Alvenia), Juánean (Pamela), Marvin Denard (Yvonne), MoKeeda (Deborah), and adopted sons Sean (Alvenia) and Eric (Yvonne). He is also survived by four sisters: Denise, Tracy, Annette, and Candy and one brother, Chuckie. He was preceded in death by siblings: Cherylann, Mike, Tyrone, Cynthia, Renee, Raymond, Ronald, Tina.   MoKie is mourned by many other relatives and a host of friends.

 

His memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
