Lucy Elizabeth Schriner, 95, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. A visitation will be held from 9 – 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. A livestream of the funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website tribute page for Lucy, under “photos and videos,” starting at 11 a.m. on October 8. Burial: Saint Joseph Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. A light lunch will be served at the funeral home following the burial.

Lucy (always known as Betty) was born July 25, 1929, in Buckingham, Iowa, to Agnes and Fulton Boyd. Regardless of her family’s hardships, Betty had fond memories of her childhood that she enjoyed sharing.

Betty married Ken Schriner on August 19, 1946, and they moved to Blairstown. Kenny, Betty, and their two young children, John and Mary, moved to Cedar Rapids in November 1957 and bought their house in Cedar Hills the following year. Betty lived in that house for 62 years, until she moved to Meadowview Memory Care for the final three-and-a-half years of her life.

Betty was a devout Christian and was very proud to be a charter member at St. Jude’s Catholic Church. Besides being a wife, mom, and grandma and aunt, she worked at Smulekoff’s Furniture Store, where she retired after 13 years. They also enjoyed traveling and took many family camping trips in the 50’s and 60’s, union and political trips in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, as well as many other vacations over the course of their 56-year marriage. They especially enjoyed going to Las Vegas. After Kenny passed away in 2002, Betty continued to go on trips with friends.

Betty was very active right up until the end of her 80’s. Sundays were reserved for church and dinner with her brother George, daughter-in-law DeAnn, and granddaughter Kelly. She was an avid reader, she sewed, did counted cross-stitch, and made various crafts from plastic canvas.

Betty is survived by her son, John Schriner (Melody Turner), former daughter-in-law, DeAnn Schriner, grandsons, Chad Jones, Jason Ross, Andy (Stefanie) Schriner, granddaughters, Kelly Schriner, Kim (Don) Russom, great-grandsons, Clay Schriner, Ty Schriner, and Payton Russom, and nephew Craig (Donna) Fish, and as well as many nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Schriner, daughter, Mary Ellen Jones, sister and brother-in-law, Kate and Dave Fish, and a brother George Boyd. Betty lived a long and full life and was deeply loved by her friends and family.

The Schriner family would like to recognize and thank the outstanding staff at Meadowview Care Center and Hospice for their helpful, kind, and patient treatment of Betty during her final years of life. They have tremendously challenging jobs and should be recognized for their dedication and excellence.
