Patricia Ann Lafler (Hostak)
Cedar Rapids
Patricia Ann Lafler (Hostak), 92, a lifelong Cedar Rapidian, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 29, 2024. A private graveside service was held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Patricia was born on February 9, 1932, to Paul and Vera (Wood) Hostak at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1950. On September 15, 1951, she married John E. Lafler at St. Paul’s Church in Cedar Rapids, IA, and together they raised two daughters.
Patricia dedicated 32 years of service to the Cedar Rapids Community School District, retiring as the cafeteria manager of Monroe Elementary School in 2002.
In 1962, she began a personal relationship with Jesus, which became a cornerstone throughout her life. She loved sharing her faith and was a shining beacon of Christ’s love. As a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, she taught Sunday school and worked in the kitchen during Vacation Bible School each summer. Later, she joined Stonebridge Church, where she continued to selflessly volunteer her time.
She would often share fond memories of her summers spent at Clear Lake, IA with her uncle Mert, grandma Jennie and her sister Shirley. She continued to enjoy her time there in the summer, bringing the tradition to her family. From boat rides to shopping at the dime store to watching the sunset over the lake.
Patricia enjoyed fishing with her husband and traveling to Branson, MO. A memorable vacation was driving through Alaska shortly after her retirement. She cherished time with her grandchildren, whether attending their events, the annual family trip to Adventureland, or spoiling them with special birthday outings.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, John Lafler; her sister, Shirley Murdock; her daughters, Barb (John) Klekar and Jeri (Don) Snyder; her grandchildren, Jeremy (Mandy), Nicole, Christopher (Kelly), Jennifer, Colyn (Erica); her great-grandchildren, Jersey, Keaton, Kenton, and Aaron; her two great-great-grandchildren; and her beloved family pets, Lacey, Faith, Skye, and Kal.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law Wayne Murdock.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Oldorf Hospice House for their compassion and care during Patricia’s final days.
Patricia’s life was a testament to her faith, love, and dedication to her family and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
