Max Killian Pike, 23, of Cedar Rapids, passed away July 24, 2024. An Open House, Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 3, from 1-4 pm at Community of Christ, 1500 Blairs Ferry Road, Hiawatha, Iowa 52233. A moment of remembrance will be held at 2 pm. Following this, the family would like to ask anyone who is willing to share memories that Max has made with their friends, family, co-workers and students.

Max was born on November 16, 2000, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the child of Ryan Roy and Shellie Darlene Pike. They graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. Max then attended the University of Northern Iowa graduating with a Bachelor of English Teaching degree. They worked as an English Teacher and GSA Advisor at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. During their short time at Washington High School, many students and co-workers have noted that Max was committed to ensuring that every student felt safe, welcome and able to be their authentic selves while learning. Max helped many students graduate and will forever live on in each of their successes. Max has also worked as a member of the Extended Day Staff at Summit School in Cedar Rapids and as a K.I.C.K Counselor at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Max was a member of the following: GSA at Washington High School, Phi Sigma Pi Fraternity – Eta Alpha Chapter, Scouts, and Washington High School PTA. While a member of Phi Sigma Alpha, they served as treasurer and president. Max enjoyed reading, especially poetry, and sharing the joy of reading with others. Traveling, music, and going to concerts were some of their other interests. Trips to Paris, London, Greece, and New York were experiences that Max truly loved. The Marvel movies and series were also favorites. Most of all, Max loved helping others succeed in life.

Survivors include Max’s beloved cat Tink; parents Ryan and Shellie Pike of Fairfax; Big Sister Val Pike of Fairfax; grandparents Scott and Yulanda (Lanham) O’Rourke of Mustang, OK and Roy and Shirley Pike of Mason City; aunts and uncles Jim and Kellie (Parker) Scarrow of Kansas City, MO, Grant Wood of Blanchard, OK, Mike and Vickie (Pike) Julsen of Hiawatha, Jim and Becky (Pike) Patrick of Mason City, and Brian and Lisa Pike of Mason City; cousins Ben and Kala (Scarrow) Abel of Gardner, KS, Nate Scarrow of Wichita, KS, Emma Wood of Blanchard, OK, Joseph Wood of Blanchard, OK, James and Amber (Pike) Juhl of Rockwell, Jacob Pike of Mason City, Nik and Tricia Anderson of Buda, TX, Tom and Tina Anderson of Knoxville, TN, Trenton Anderson of Mason City, Kerrell Bennett of Mason City, Candace Pederson of Greene, and Hans and Jamie (Monaghan) Wachal of Cedar Rapids.

Max is also survived by many extended family including aunts, uncles, and cousins. Innumerable amazing friends as well as students who were like their family at Washington High School and Summit Schools in Cedar Rapids.

Preceding Max in death were aunt Sherry (Pike) Boskovich; uncle Bruce Pike; and cousin Tyler Anderson.

The family would like to thank everyone who has touched Max’s life and helped mold them into the amazing person they were. Additional thanks to all the wonderfully open and accepting people in the world.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to ask everyone to hug their family and friends tightly and say “I Love You” often. The family will be contributing donations to a scholarship fund to support members of the LGBTQIA+ Community in advancing their educational goals.
