Congress and White House have failed on immigration for decades | READER COMMENTARY

It is extremely shameful that those who have served as president of the United States or as a member of Congress since 1986 have not come up with a legal process to handle immigration (“Busing immigrants to sanctuary cities has gone from gimmick to act of aggression,” Jan. 9). Hopefully (but I doubt it), one day the U.S. will have real problem solvers in Congress rather than the left- and right-wing ideologues we have now. Immigration is one of the solvable issues. I think lawful and process-oriented immigration is a good thing.

Here are the steps to take:

First, give current undocumented immigrants the opportunity to become citizens by requiring them to pass English language and civic tests, and have a W2 or 1099 job. They would also be required to be self-sustaining and not eligible for welfare. If these folks don’t want to do these things, then they should be out of here.

Second, stop illegal immigration.

Third, set up a small, nonpartisan group to set an annual number of legal immigrants. The number would be backed up by jobs that need to be filled, and by state, and include some justifiable refugees. Prospective immigrants would apply to their respective U.S. embassies.

Get the politics out of the equation and solve the problem.
