Of Walworth
John E. Schwenn passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Mercy Walworth Medical Center. He was born February 5, 1941 in Madison, Wisconsin to Melvin J. and Ruth A. (Tinkham) Schwenn.
John grew up in Mount Horeb, WI, where he participated in numerous sports, worked as a lifeguard at the local pool, and became an Eagle Scout. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Education Degree from Luther College in Decora, IA, and a Masters Degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Stockton High School in Illinois provided the start to his teaching and coaching career and is where he met his wife, Kay. They were married in December of 1966 in Madison, WI and moved to Walworth in 1967 where they raised their 3 children. John taught Health and Science for 29 years at Big Foot High School until his retirement in 1996. He coached Track and Cross Country for many years as well.
In recent years John enjoyed watching his two grandsons participate in all of their activities. Throughout his life he enjoyed many hobbies and interests including running marathons, biking, golfing, gardening, and watching Wisconsin sports. He had a strong faith in God and was very active at Faith Lutheran Church, where he maintained the garden. His love of Mount Horeb and Big Foot High School were constants throughout his life.
John is survived by his wife Kay, his children Joanne (Mike) Sheen and David Schwenn; grandchildren Sam and Max Sheen; nephew Dan (Jodi) O’Boyle; nieces Jane O’Boyle, Debra (Jim) Loe, and Lisa (Derek) Betlock; and 8 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Chris Schwenn and his brother Henry (Janet) Schwenn.
A private family burial will take place at Walworth Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Life at Faith Lutheran Church in Walworth on Saturday, January 27th. Visitation will be at 11 AM with a service at 1 PM.
