Gene David Knight, 81, passed on Oct. 3, 2023, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Celebration of life service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be one hour prior services at the chapel. The burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Gene was born Oct. 9, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Ernest Dewayne and Ruth (Dose) Knight. He graduated from Washington High School, class of 1960, with the first class to go all three years in the new building. After graduating he attended Coe College, where he joined the ROTC. Gene married Paula Wieneke on Oct. 26, 1963. They moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where he started at the Postal Service as a letter carrier. Upon returning to Cedar Rapids, he continued at the Post Office for the next 30 years, retiring in 1998. He then went on to work in the IT department at Quick Verse and finally Rockwell Collins where he retired for a second time. Gene always put family first, from adventures with his eight brothers, to his children and grandchildren. He always enjoyed any time he could spend with friends and family, watching Cubs games, playing cards, bowling and traveling. He passed on his love of the game Oh Hell (trump) and computers. Gene enjoyed Christmas time for the shopping and participating in Operation Christmas Child with Paula.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Therese (Thomas) Knight-High; son, Joe (Jennie) Knight; grandchildren, Lissette, Gideon and LeaRuth High; his brothers, Paul, Dean (Suzanne), Michael, Patrick (Diana), Daniel (Vickie) and Dennis Knight; his sister-in-law, Dotti Knight; as well as his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Dewayne and Ruth (Dose) Knight; his wife, Paula Knight; his brothers, Glen and Timothy Knight; and sisters-in-law, Kay, Kathleen and Diana Lyn Knight.
