John was born on March 12, 1931, in Mason City, Iowa, and was raised by Robert and Irene Stewart. After graduating from Fort Dodge Senior High, he went on to attend Coe College where he played football and basketball. After graduating from Coe College, he served in the Air Force, then he spent his entire career working for Collins Radio/Rockwell where eventually he became the Director of Purchasing.

John was an avid golfer, enjoyed cycling/exercising, and cheering for the Hawkeyes and the Cubs. John spent countless hours volunteering at McKinley basketball program. Here he met and bonded with Coach Mike Moore. John also spent countless hours ringing the bell for the Salvation Army.

John was strong-willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He loved going to his Ft. Dodge high school class reunions, as did the rest of his class.

Anyone who came into John’s orbit became aware they were presence of man that was warm, generous, funny, but direct. This is reflected through life’s work, his kids and grandkids.

John was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Gertrude “Trudy” Stewart. He is survived by his son, Bob (Lynn), son, David (Suzanne), and daughter, Ann. Also, his five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Unity Point Hospice and the staff at Grand Living. In lieu of flowers the family would like contributions directed to the Salvation Army.
