Michael Martin Streit died on April 10, 2023. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 20, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Dennis Miller.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Cedar Memorial West Chapel on Wednesday, April 19. A vigil service will follow at the end of the wake at 6:30 p.m. Burial will follow funeral mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery on Sisley Grove Road in Cedar Rapids. After burial, lunch will follow in Cox Hall, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Center.

Born Jan. 28,1936, in Algona, Iowa, to Matt and Elvene Streit, Mike graduated Algona High School and then attended the University of Iowa where he met his wife, M. Maureen “Maury” Steele, a wild, wacky, wonderful woman. They were married Aug. 10, 1957, at St. Patrick’s Church, Cedar Rapids.

Mike is survived by children, Mark (Becky), Mitch (Melissa), Monte, Matthew (Ronda), Martin (Donna), Andrew (Peggy), Peter (Jane) and Molly (Rob) Bryer; grandchildren, Caitlin (Brad) Teplicky, Michael J.(Kaylee), Michaela, Michenzie, Mason, Madison, Megan (Alex) Dawson, Marisa (Mason) O’Neill, Ryan, Colin, Benjamin, Christopher, Cameron, Zachary, Eilen, Haelen, Autumn (Wessel) Streit and Brayden, Alyssa and Colton Bryer; and great-grandchildren, Adeline and Evelyn Teplicky and Adelyn O’Neill. He is survived by his brother, Charles Streit (Janyce) of Austin, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 66 years, Maury; parents, Mathew and Elvene (Coonan) Streit; two sisters, Margaret and Teresa; and two grandchildren.

Mike has been a member of St. Jude’s and St. Patrick’s Churches. He was a member of KC Council 5544 and served as a past Grand Knight. He also participated in Catholic Layman’s Club and the Moose. He was a charter member of Cub Scout Pack 10 and served many years as Cubmaster. Mike was very involved with St. Jude’s annual Sweet Corn Festival for over 25 years.

Mike enjoyed Iowa Hawkeye football, camping, golf (once scored a hole-in-one) and was notorious for bad jokes, but a great sense of humor. He also was a big fan of napping as his children often kept him up late and got him up early.

During his life, Mike worked in veterinary drug sales, SWP Contractors, an independent insurance agent and at Meth-Wick Manor.
