Joseph Leroy Donehue
- February 22, 2022
Joseph Leroy Donehue, age 89, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday, February 17, 2022, in his residence following a period of declining health.
Born in the family home in Old Town Valley at New Philadelphia on April 27, 1932, Joe was one of eight children born to the late Lacy and Ida Eichel Donehue.
From an early age, Joe learned to be around horses and for much of his life raised, showed, bred, and trained various types that included Hackney Show Ponies, American Saddlebred, and Quarter Horses. This passion began while helping his father care for the mules used in the former coal mines in Tusky and being with his grandfather as he traded and dealt with horses in Holmes County.
Professionally Joe had a 42-year career with the former Beitner/Capital Tire Company. He began working on commercial equipment tires and driving the boom truck and ultimately retired as the office manager. He was a longtime member of LifeWay Church at New Philadelphia and was also a skilled carpenter and wood crafter.
Joe is survived by his children, Joseph (Jane) Donehue of Uhrichsville, James (Sandy) Donehue of New Philadelphia and Becky (Daniel) Petitte of Sugarcreek; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret (Robert) Cash of Massillon; a brother, Dick Donehue of West Lafayette, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 70 years, Beverly; a sister, Mary Katherine Warner; an infant brother, and three brothers, Bill, Charles, and John Donehue.
In keeping with Joe’s wishes cremation will take place. A combined celebration of life service for Joe and Beverly will take place at a later date. The Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia is handling arrangements.
Memorial contributions in Joe’s memory may be directed to either LifeWay Church, 742 Cookson Ave SE, or Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
