Margaret “Susan” Young Hutchens
- February 7, 2022
Margaret “Susan” Young Hutchens, 74 years old, of Toano, VA passed away peacefully on February 4, 2022. She was a lifelong resident of the area. Susan was born April 27, 1947 in Christiansburg, VA to the late Harry Lee Young Jr and Mildred Spradlin Young. They soon moved to a dairy farm in Williamsburg where she was raised and graduated from York High School. She also attended business classes at William & Mary.
Susan will be remembered most for her love of family, friends, and music. She was always on call for her family, especially her grandchildren. She was an alto in the parish choir and played autoharp in the praise band at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church. Previously, she was a long-time member of Olive Branch Christian Church serving many roles including the choir and bell choir. In her earlier years, she volunteered in the community in the Ladies Auxiliary and the James City Expo. She was an avid reader, a talented seamstress, and a wonderful cook.
Sewing was more than a hobby for her. She worked at Fabrics Unique for many years in sales and teaching sewing classes. Her creativity and talent continued to shine thorough the many products she and her family created in their woodworking business, Virginia’s Finest Crafts. Susan had a genuine love of history and enjoyed supporting customers of historical merchandise for many years at Design Masters Associates, where she retired in 2018.
The family is so grateful for the loving care she received at Edgeworth Park at New Town for assisted living and memory care for the last two years.
She was preceded in death by her special love David Haak, her late husband, William Richard “Rick” Hutchens, and her son, Michael Hutchens.
She is survived by her daughter, Andrea Sheffield (Anthony); son Steven Hutchens (Eleanor); brothers Charles “Chuck” Young (Gwen) and Douglas “Doug” Young; grandchildren Gerald, Deborah Anne, Dawson, Madeline, & Lucy.
A memorial service will be held at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorial contributions be given to Hickory Neck Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice.
