In response to the growing issue of food insecurity affecting millions of Americans, the Carson City Host Lions Club has made a significant investment in local hunger relief efforts. During its regular meeting on Nov. 17 at Silver Oak Golf Club, the club donated a total of $6,000 to four organizations that provide essential food assistance to Carson City residents.
Each organization received a $1,500 donation in support of their ongoing programs:
- FISH (Friends in Service Helping)
- The Salvation Army
- Northern Nevada Dream Center
- Ron Wood Family Resource Center
Representatives from each nonprofit attended the meeting to accept their checks and share how their organizations are working together to address hunger throughout the community.

Salvation Army
Captain Ernie Evans explained that the donation will directly support families in need. “A gift of $1,500 will help as many as 250 families of four,” he said. Each grocery bag the Salvation Army distributes is valued at $65–$70, covering staples and meals for local households struggling to make ends meet.
Ron Wood Family Resource Center
Representatives Belinda Takhar and Holly Brown shared that their food bank serves approximately 100 people every day. The donation will help them replenish essential items as demand continues to rise. “This support will allow us to restock our shelves at a time when the community is depending on us more than ever,” Ms. Takhar noted.

Northern Nevada Dream Center
Executive Director Susan Sorenson described a recent surge in need: “We fed 1,100 people just last week due to SNAP delays,” she said. Last year, the Dream Center served more than 7,000 people, operating a food pantry twice a month and making weekly home deliveries every Wednesday. The donation will help the organization fill Christmas food baskets for families during the holiday season.

FISH – Friends in Service Helping
Executive Director Jim Peckham explained that FISH also serves about 7,000 people annually, focusing on providing high-protein foods such as tuna and peanut butter, along with daily hot meals in their dining room. With 29 employees and 450 volunteers, FISH plays a major role in food assistance and support services throughout Carson City.
Working Together to Fight Hunger
The four organizations regularly coordinate with one another, ensuring that different segments of the community — families, seniors, individuals experiencing homelessness, and those facing unexpected hardship — receive the support they need.
The Carson City Host Lions Club is proud to bolster these efforts as part of Lions Clubs International’s global focus on hunger relief, one of the organization’s eight signature causes. By partnering with frontline agencies, the club continues its mission to serve the Carson City community with compassion and commitment.
