William Bates

William “Bill” Howard Bates, a cherished husband and devoted son, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025, in Chesapeake, Virginia. Born on June 5, 1947, in Portsmouth, Bill lived a life defined by empathy and dedication, reaching the age of 78.

He was predeceased by his father, Donald Joseph Bates; and his grandparents.

Bill enjoyed many things but top of the list would be aircraft, flying and anything to do with aviation. Bill was your consummate patriot. He was red, white and blue to the bone and never hesitated to express it. He loved and dearly respected the military personnel with whom he interacted and had a personal friendship. In cases when he was able to help with some of them professionally, it was his greatest joy. A fun fact is that Bill had a 4-octave singing voice range. This is of special note because Bill’s second love was music in every way, shape and form. Whether it was his vocal abilities or his love of several instruments including guitar, and especially piano. When the music was playing Bill was smiling and usually singing.

At the age of 50, Bill decided to return to school and chose Regent University to earn his master’s degree in Counseling. He became a licensed professional counselor and was able to spend the next 28 years of his life helping people find strength to take the next step and find a new life, especially military personnel and veterans. His compassionate nature and professional expertise left a lasting impact on all who sought his counsel. Bill loved his nieces and nephews and enjoyed sharing life experiences with them.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly Batluck Bates; his mother, Merimae Ferguson Bates; sister, Donna Bates Jethro, who cherish his memory deeply. He will be remembered as a pillar of strength and a source of unwavering support for his family. Of special note is Bill’s 50+year friendship with his college friend Rick Sommer. Rick and his friendship have been “present for duty” through the thick and thin of life. Bill’s life was significantly enriched because of Rick.

A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Oman Funeral Home, located at 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring the life of a man who touched so many with his kindness and wisdom. In lieu of flowers, please support the mission of “Sheep Dog Coalition” a nonprofit that provides special support to the members of the special operations community in need. Donations may be made by going to the website, Sheepdogcoalition.org.

Bill’s legacy of compassion and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
