Betty Jo Hoffie, 94, of Athens, Georgia, formerly of Harrison, passed away peacefully at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Manor Lake Assisted Living Facility in Athens.
She was born on March 29, 1931, in Amagon, Arkansas, to Chester Clarence and Gladys Alma Balch Tate. Betty had a heart for hospitality and a gift for bringing people together. She loved cooking delicious meals, especially when it meant gathering her family around the table. She cherished time spent with friends, whether playing a game of cards or laughing over a round of Dominos. Her door—and her heart—were always open. Betty’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was of the Baptist faith and, during her years in Harrison, enjoyed attending the Senior Center and was a member of the Newcomers Club.
She was a longtime resident of the Chicago suburbs, where she created a warm and welcoming home. She married Bernard Stout, also of Arkansas, and together they were blessed with three daughters, Linda Goldstone of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, Jeanette Voss and her husband, Hank, of Upland, Indiana, and Cheryl Torrence and her husband, Robert, of Winterville, Georgia.
Later in life, she married Kenneth Hoffie, and with love and care, helped raise three sons, Robert Hoffie and his wife, Patricia, Richard Hoffie, now deceased, and Ronald Hoffie. She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands, Bernard Stout and Kenneth Hoffie; a stepson, Richard Hoffie; and her siblings, Willis Ray Tate, Thomas Tate, Jim Tate, and Rita Czech.
Betty is lovingly remembered by her 16 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren, each one a treasure in her eyes.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Maplewood Cemetery with Pastor Terry Baumann officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Holt Memorial Chapel.
Pallbearers will be Robert Torrence, Henry Voss, David Voss, Aaron Voss, Justin Goldstone, and Jordan Goldstone.
