In Loving Memory of Robert (Bob) Petty

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, at the age of 73 Heaven welcomed Robert “Bob” Petty of Phoenix, Arizona, a faithful servant of the Lord whose life was marked by love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family.

Bob was born on March 23 in Houston, Texas. He lived a life of strength, humility and faith. A proud veteran, Bob carried the same honor and dedication he showed in the Navy into every part of his life—from his career, his family, and his community.

Bob married the love of his life, Sondra, and together they built a marriage rooted in faith, laughter and deep love. Married for 48 years, their home became a sanctuary not only for their children and grandchildren but for over 95 foster children, each of whom were welcomed with open arms and the steady security of Bob’s presence. In this calling, Bob and Sondra lived out James 1:27 “to look after orphans and widows in their distress.”

He dedicated 36 years of his career with Salt River Project where his work ethic and loyalty earned him the respect of his colleagues until his retirement. But outside of work, Bob’s heart belonged to the outdoors. He found joy and peace in God’s creation, while hiking Arizona’s trails, especially the Grand Canyon, and gathering his family for camping trips that became treasured traditions.

Bob was known for his sharp wit and quick one-liners, his practical wisdom, and his ability to make those around him laugh and feel cared for. He led not only with words but with example, showing his family and friends what it meant to live with integrity, humility, and a servant’s heart.

He leaves behind a legacy of love through his wife Sondra Petty, his children Robyn Olson (Mark) and Matthew Petty (Kandrea), sister Laurie Johnson-Cason, 5 grandchildren Dyllan, Kiley, Bryce, Brielle and Quinn; who will carry his memory forward in their lives. Bob’s faith, generosity, and kindness touched countless lives, and he will be remembered always as a man who gave more than he took.

Though his absence leaves an ache, his family takes comfort knowing he has heard the words: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

A Celebration of Life will be held at Black Mountain Baptist Church Cave Creek, AZ on September 12th @ 10am with private family burial with military honors to follow at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christian Family Care in his honor @cfcare.org to help foster children in need.
