John Shortt II

JOHN POLLARD SHORTT II, 64, of Grundy, VA, entered his eternal home, Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, KY. Born and raised in Grundy, he was the son of the late John Pollard Shortt and Ann Caroline (Nichols) Shortt. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, Pollard was a member of Vansant Presbyterian Church.

Pollard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and the proud owner and operator of Shortt & Son Paving for over 4 decades. He was passionate about the outdoors-he loved kayaking, riding motorcycles, camping, and spending time on the lake with his family. He had a deep love for animals, a zest for travel, and a well known sense of humor that made him a joyful presence in the lives of many. A true prankster with a big heart, Pollard never met a stranger and always greeted others with a warm smile.

He was preceded in death by his parents; paternal grandparents, Fred and Gaynell (Scott) Shortt; Uncles: Robert Shortt, David Shortt and Rex Spencer; Aunt: Virginia Shortt; and his Cherished Dog: Sophie.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 ½ years, Deanna Shawn (Ramey) Shortt of Grundy, VA; his children, Jordan (April) Ramey and Emilee Brooke Shortt, both of Grundy, VA; and his adored grandchildren: Owen Ramey, Tatum Ramey and Piper Mae Ramey. He is also lovingly remembered by his Special Aunts: Mary Ruth Shortt Spencer and Peggy McConnaughey, and Dear Friends: Chris Shortt, Mike Perkins, Chris Ratliff, Aaron Skeens and Pamela Sykes.

Also, survived by several cousins, nephews, nieces and friends– too many to name but each one held a special place in his heart.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the current and former employees of Shortt and Son Paving for their dedication and support throughout the years.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
